A Chance to Dance: An Ovation Original Series
|
|
Ovation’s original dance series A Chance to Dance displays a progressive and aggressive dance competition documentary that highlights the blood, sweat and tears it takes to get to the top of the heap. The series doesn’t just show the polished result, but the hard work, pressure and incredible determination a dancer must have to survive a professional dance career. The cut throat world of dance competition produces steadfast and resilient young adults who display their soul on tap.
The series opens with producer Nigel Lythgoe himself telephoning UK’s premier dance masters BalletBoyz, to basically form a professional dance company in 28 days. Not only must they find the best dancers by provided touring auditions, but they must train them to perform a new choreographed piece for New York’s benefit “Dizzy Feet” – where industry professionals all flock to view.
The documentary follows the final group of dancers from auditioning, to rehearsing and everything in between. Each dancer struggles with their own set of physical and emotional limitations in order to put unharnessed soul into the music.
BalletBoyz was founded by former professional Royal Ballet dancers Michael Nunn and Billy Trevitt in 2001. They have gained mainstream popularity through guest judging on the popular television series “So You Think You Can Dance” but have been very well known in the dance world for well over a decade.
The final performance showcases an incredible dance performance with passion, depth and sacrifice. It is no less than refreshing to view a documentary series like this. It provides dance enthusiasts and aspiring dancers alike with a reality about dance. It takes the work of a professional athlete, and just to get noticed, or gain a pat on the back after 10 hours of giving 100% is more than enough to keep them going.
