LA Contemporary Dance Company presents “Fight or Flight”

Mimoda Studio Theatre
December 11-13 & 18-20, 2009

Artistic Director: Kate Hutter
Choreographed by: Scott Hislop, Kate Hutter, Adam Parson

Already a fan of L.A. Contemporary Dance Company, attended the new work “Fight or Flight” at the Mimoda Studio Theatre in Los Angeles. Suffice it to say; Artistic director Kate Hutter never fails to bring something new to the plate. This nonprofit dance company continues to breathe life, into new concepts and scenarios, making one intensely active in personal interpretation.

“Fight of Flight” is a series of three dance works; “Initiator” choreographed by Adam Parson, “rEVOLUTION” choreographed by Scott Hislop, and “I Ran” choreographed by Kate Hutter. L.A. Contemporary Dance Company continues to stretch our proverbial boundaries with inventive works, presented by a group of incredible dance artists.

“Initiator”, by Adam Parson, reels us a somber, unassuming entrance into a world we know little about. The opening piece darts projections of third world living, and the repression of women. “Initiator” brings us through the journey of duty, fear, awakening, and hope of a new day. The earthly musical sounds and sensitive reactive movement, enveloped with serial emotion, shows the spirit of the journey. Stand out performer Devon Fulton, uses every cell to communicate with dexterity and zeal. Adam Parson leaves us with a profound work of cultural significance. Well done.

Scott Hislop’s “rEVOLUTION” followed, in an emotional wave of expedition. “rEVOLUTION” stamps humankind, with a right of passage, into evolution. As we shed our skins, and awaken into a new understanding of existence, we learn to uplift one another so we evolve as a whole. Each dancer gave an original spiritual emotion to the audience; every interpretation presents unique and valuable. The lifts and partnering concepts in this work are most clever and innovative, and the costuming was memorable. Scott Hislop’s “rEVOLUTION” is a potent mosaic of collective human consciousness.

To stir the pot, Kate Hutter presents new work “I Ran”. Like a super-ball, Kate Hutter exploits teenage trance, into a spastic bounce. “I Ran” is a work, displaying the confusion, inhibition, and self-discovery every young adult must go through in order to “break on through to the other side” (thanks Jim Morrison). “I Ran” reminds us of a young emotional state; an unwillingness to awaken the gusto of life, that is instead, detained awkwardly inside. Kate Hutter’s work “I Ran,” snapped, crackled and popped! There is something refreshing about not taking things too seriously, what a riot!

“Fight or Flight” is a must see commission. This company never fails to pull and prod life situations into dynamic works of art. L.A. Contemporary Dance Company continues to perform works in the Los Angeles area all throughout the year. This company is brilliant, but needs support to continue bringing dance culture to the LA area. LACDC works as a nonprofit company, backed by the Department of Cultural Affairs and the Los Angeles County Arts Commission. Come see what LACDC is all about, view their performance calendar at
