CONFIGURATION DANCE PRESENTS BALLETS BY SUSAN JAFFE, YURI ZHUKOV, and MICHAEL SHANNON

Configuration Dance returns to New York with ballets by choreographers Yuri Zhukov, Michael Shannon, and Susan Jaffe, May 12 & 13 at Ailey Citigroup Theater. Previously located on Cape Cod, the Company is now headquartered in Buffalo. Artistic Director is Buffalo native Joseph Cipolla and principal dancer is Catherine Batcheller, both former principal dancers with the Birmingham Royal Ballet in England.
The Company is very pleased to present a ballet created for them by Susan Jaffe, former principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre and a new member of the National Advisory Board of Configuration Dance Theatre. Her new pas de deux, "Novem," is set to music by Arvo Part.
Yuri Zhukov gained recognition as a dancer with the Kirov, San Francisco, and Birmingham Royal Ballets. His new work, "Levitation," builds upon shifting rhythms of contemporary jazz music by the piano trio known as "3io 4tet." Zhukov was also in a jazzy mood for his 2007 ballet "No Time Jazz," called "funny" and "charming" by Jennifer Dunning, who added "Mr. Zhukov and his dancers have just the right light touch and assurance." Configuration also welcomes back frequent contributor Michael Shannon, who has the distinction of being the first American Graduate of the Bolshoi Ballet Academy and the first foreign Principal Soloist of the Bolshoi Ballet. He was also a Principal Soloist at the Vienna State Opera Ballet and the Birmingham Royal Ballet, among others. Three Shannon works will be performed: his lighthearted "What's the Pointe?", based upon J.S. Bach's "Six Suites for Unaccompanied Cello," the powerful solo based upon Shigeru Umebayashi's "Yumeji," and the premiere of "Tchaicotic," expressing the unbridled passions of those crazy in love with Tchaikovsky!
ABOUT CONFIGURATION:
Artistic Director Joseph Cipolla and Principal Dancer Catherine Batcheller, who met as Principal Dancers with Birmingham Royal Ballet in England, founded Configuration Dance in 2000 to present contemporary ballets by a variety of choreographers. Cipolla's credits also include performing with the Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem, and as a guest with Birmingham Royal Ballet for their 2004 Ashton Festival at Lincoln Center. Ms. Batcheller danced with the San Francisco Ballet and Stuttgart Ballet before joining Birmingham Royal Ballet, where she danced all the ballerina roles. Originally headquartered on Cape Cod, the Company realized its dream of having a permanent home with its 2008 move to Buffalo NY, Cipolla's home town.
